Multichannel Reproduction for Immersive Audio

The progress in the fields of digital signal processing and computational power has significantly contributed to the crossing of many frontiers in the audio industry. One of these frontiers is the realization of new levels of immersive experiences in performing arts venues, entertainment facilities, and retail businesses. In fact, in recent years, sonic immersion has become a key objective of sound systems.

Over the last decades, spatial sound has undergone three evolutionary stages, from simple mono systems to stereo and finally, to surround sound and other multi-channel-based systems. The multi-channel-based systems differ from one another in a number of ways, including the number of channels used, the concepts employed, and configurations adopted.  

Object-based spatial sound systems such as higher-order ambisonics and wave field synthesis are regarded typical examples of the high-end solutions in spatial sound systems. Both technological developments provide higher levels of realism and authenticity when it comes to spatial sound in rooms. They overcome many of the limitations of channel-based systems, including the two most significant: the narrow sweet-spot and the unequal immersive experience at different seats. The fulfillment of a significantly more realistic and authentic sound experience has been associated with high complexity and costs. The limitations of sound field synthesis systems have made the former approaches impractical for sound installation and pro audio markets.

The German loudspeaker manufacturer Holoplot has, however, taken on the challenge of making object-based spatial sound systems commercially and economically viable. The company has introduced a patented modular and scalable wave-field-synthesis-based system in recent years. Their technology enriches the installation and pro audio markets with the advantages of the wave field synthesis object-based spatial/immersive sound without struggling with the prohibitive complexities of comparable systems.

Emad is an experienced acoustician and AV engineer in the field of room acoustics and electroacoustics. With more than 15 years of experience in global consulting offices, he has been involved in many projects internationally. To share his experience, he gives acoustic and EASE trainings in different parts of the world.
